Green Leaf Dispensary Raided… For The Fifth Time

The adage goes, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. When it comes to the Green Leaf in Kahnawake, add two more trys.

Kahnawake Peacekeeper entry team was again at Green Leaf on Highway 138, and seized a large quantity of suspected marijuana and marijuana-laced products.

“We received complaints, and we got a warrant,” said assistant PK chief Jody Diabo.

According to the PK report, 12 officers, led by PK Jennifer Stacey, arrived at the business across from Playground Poker Club at 9:50 a.m. last Friday, February 8. As the door was locked, officers kicked in the door and arrested three local males working the shop. Officers seized suspected marijuana, as well as edibles and oils worth over $20,000.

Charges are pending for possession for the purposes of sale and distribution of a controlled substance in contravention of the Canadian Cannabis Act and the Kahnawake Cannabis Act.

Diabo said when the three men are formally charged the PKs will release the names of those charged.

“They have to catalogue everything and do that stuff first,” said Diabo. “They have to send some of the stuff to the lab to make sure that there is cannabis in it.”

Hank Delisle is due back in court next Wednesday, February 20 on charges filed against him in relation to a previous raid.

Though cannabis in raw form is legal according to the October 2017 Canadian law, edibles remain illegal, and dispensaries are illegal without a health Canada and Kahnawake Cannabis Law permit.

“It’s still illegal,” said Diabo. “In Quebec, the brownies and food products are illegal still, (but) it doesn’t matter because there is still a moratorium in town, regardless.”

The Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs issued a release this week opposing cannabis use, sale or production on any Haudenosaunee territory.

“The Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs does not sanction any cannabis products at all,” the release signed by administrator Bula Hill reads. “The Mohawk Nation Council has strong opinions against the creation of cannabis industry in Mohawk territory.”

The release goes on to explain that the council is against anything the council refers to as a “mind-changer.”

The release comes in response to Akwesasne Mohawk Police raids of two dispensaries on Cornwall Island. Wild Flower Cannabis Dispensary along with the AK420 dispensary were raided February 5.

“The cannabis dispensaries that were in operation on Kawenokowane:ne (Cornwall Island) have misled many people by making claims that they are operating legally under the strength of the Kaianerakowa (Great Law of Peace), as well as treaties which we have jurisdiction over,” the nation’s release reads. “It is our position that without our approval that these individuals cease any further claims that they are conducting any business under such laws and agreements that remain sacred to us. We will not support people doing this.”

Calls to the Akwesasne Police from The Eastern Door for more information on the raid have not been returned.
