A Cannabis store owner in a Cape Breton First Nation is speaking out after the province recently announced higher fines and new offences for sellers and buyers in the illegal market.
A person selling cannabis in Nova Scotia can be fined $25, 000 dollars up from $5, 000, and the fine’s increasing to $50, 000 from $15, 000 for businesses.
The store owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the government should step aside because they provide easy access for people who use cannabis as a pain killer and relief from anxiety.
A Public Bills Committee gathered last March where Thunderbird Swooping Down Woman (Darlene Gilbert) said the province has no right to give instructions to Indigenous people on the laws governing cannabis sales.
Minister responsible for L’nu Affairs Leah Martin told reporters after a cabinet meeting earlier this month that the government is working with Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs to ease tensions.
The province’s fine for buying cannabis anywhere other than a liquor store is going up from $600 to $5, 000 dollars.
