NOTES: BC First Nations Lobbying on Cannabis

A November 27th article in mjbizdaily.com reported that in British Columbia the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation was among the groups “lobbying the province over its cannabis policies in recent months. “

The BC Lobbyist Registry shows that on July 8th 2019, Zayge Klein, of Strategies North Advisory Inc, registered to lobby on behalf of Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation. The lobbying included “[a]ttempting to obtain a meeting with Minister Farnworth regarding cannabis cultivation”.  Mike Farnworth is the Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

Then on October 14th Grant J Barley, also of Strategies North Advisory Inc registed to lobby on bahalf of Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation in regards to a “Cannabis Cultivation meeting with Minister Farnworth.”

Zayge Klein is also registered in September 2019 to lobby on behalf of the Williams Lake Indian Band to arrange a meeting with Minister Farnworth on issues including Cannabis. It appears that this meeting took place.

Prior to this, in June 2019, Dustin Alvarez, of Strategies North Advisory Inc registered to lobby on behalf of the Williams Lake Indian Band on issues including:

  • Arranging meeting between an individual and a public office holder
  • Arranging a meeting between WLIB and Minister Farnworths office to discuss First Nations participation in the legal cannabis industry.
