Illegal cannabis raids continue in Tyendinaga; Council issues statement

From Quinte News September 24 2025

A heavy police presence continues on Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory Wednesday in an effort to crack down on illegal cannabis production.

Tyendinaga Police Service (TPS) and the OPP’s Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau began executing multiple warrants on the reserve Tuesday.

In a statement Wednesday, TPS says they have recovered stolen property, seized firearms, and halted unlawful diversion of water from the Bay of Quinte.

They add there have been several arrests of both members and non-members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.

The projected profits are estimated to be in the millions.

They say further updates will be provided.

Meanwhils, Tyendinaga Mohawk Council has released a statement on this week’s coordinated police effort.

Officials say these grow-ops involve non-Indigenous exploitation of Indigenous rights and lands.

Council and Tyendinaga Police Service received a Community Safety Petition, signed by hundreds of Community  members, asking for these illegal operations to be dealt with.

Full statement from Tyendinaga Mohawk Council:

Tyendinaga Mohawk Council (TMC) wishes to thank Tyendinaga Police Service (TPS) and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau for their collaboration in an ongoing investigation.

This investigation is to address illegal cannabis grow operations in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and remove non-members of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte associated with organized crime. As mentioned in yesterday’s police statement (page 2 of this statement) these grow-ops involve non-Indigenous exploitation of Indigenous rights and lands, and arrests have been made (page 3 of this statement). TMC and TPS are reminding the community that there are processes that need to be followed in order to complete a successful investigation, and this takes time. We all want to keep these operations out of our community going forward. TMC and TPS received a Community Safety Petition, signed by hundreds of community members, asking for these illegal operations to be dealt with, and we wish to thank the community for their support in keeping our community safe. TMC and TPS also hope for the community’s continued support as this investigation continues to unfold.
