The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Ietsénhaienhs Gina Deer is attending the National Indigenous Cannabis & Hemp Conference taking place in Kelowna, British Columbia from today until Thursday.
Ietsénhaienhs Deer has been invited to present on Kahnawà:ke’s jurisdiction in this matter, including the creation of laws using the Community Decision Making Process, as well as implications on our Justice system and Lands Unit.
“There is a genuine interest in not only the law but in the processes used to implement them,” said Ietsénhaienhs Deer. “Kahnawà:ke has been very proactive in asserting jurisdiction over our Territory. The way in which we have approached the legalization of cannabis has captured the attention of other Indigenous communities – not just cannabis, but jurisdiction as a whole.”
Ietsénhaienhs Deer will be back in the office on Monday, 2 Tsothóhrha/ December
