Band Council of Chippewas of Nawash passes Bylaw to prohibit cannabis through zoning bylaw

The Band Council of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation took the unprecedented step by passing zoning bylaws to completely ban cannabis operations on reserve. The bylaws were passed on July 11, 2019, and designate the entirety of the reserve as a “Special Development Zone” in which it is forbidden for any person to produce, sell, process, package, extract or distribute cannabis.

The bylaws were enacted in response to objections raised by community members with the operations of Wiisag Corporation, a business headquartered in the community that was planning to grow cannabis on lands within the community.

The bylaws are to come into effect for 18 months and may be extended for a further 18 months.

The bylaws are reproduced below, and may be viewed on the Chippewas of Nawash website as well.
